In 1930 Everett Briggs married Florence Bohrofen (our Grand Parents) and a few years later in 1939 purchased 160 acres of farm ground in Dallas County, Iowa. This is where our mom (Sheryl Briggs) and her sister grew up. The farm grew in October of 1955 when Everett and Florence purchased an additional 170 acres in Boone County, Iowa. This is where our parents Richard and Sheryl Schappaugh lived after they were married in Feb of 1956. The addition of another 60 acres in 1961 and another 100 acres in 1967 both in Dallas County, Iowa complete the 490 acres, that was called the Bar Lazy S LLP.

Grandpa Briggs farmed using draft horses that he showed at fairs and had won first in class. Our grandparents lived on the farm until 1965 when they moved to Perry Iowa. Before moving to town both my grandpa and Dad worked to clear the 60 acres of outbuildings and several walnut trees. The trees were made into lumber and then later made into cabinets for our mom. Our grandparents kept a garden on a portion of this ground while living in town. Grandma loved to spend the time quilting and cooking. When not out helping on the farm, Grandpa did woodworking in the basement of their Perry home until he passed in 1976. Grandma passed away in 2002.

The 4 of us kids (Mike, Ron, Doug and Roberta) were born when living at the Boone County farm. Where we lived until the summer of 1967 when we moved to the main farm in Dallas County. Growing up we raised cattle, hogs and chickens. We also grew corn, beans, and a very large garden. We were all in 4-H over the years.

Mom and dad were both active in their church as youth co-chair leaders. Dad was also a lay leader at church, a 4-H extension counselor, very active in his local Lion’s club and the Deputy District Governor at the state level of Lions. He passed away in the fall of 1979 during a harvest accident. In the following days around 65 farmers came and brought equipment to assist with the remaining harvest. Around 44 women also helped provide food to feed everyone that helped. Our mom worked with a couple of different farmers in the following years before ending with the Brelsford Family Farms in 2000 who are still currently farming the ground.

Mom remarried in 1984 to Larry York and moved to Woodward with him. This also added another 120 Acres. Larry passed away in 2004 and these acres were later passed on to his kids. After several discussions with Mom, we all decided to form the LLP in 2014 with the farm ground she brought into her marriage with Larry. Unfortunately, her health started to fail from Dementia, so she needed to be moved to skilled health care before her passing in 2015.

Working with Brelsford’s over the years has been very good. With there being little interest in continuing the farm as is, the Boone County farm was sold shortly after brother Mike’s passing in 2020. One thing has led to another, and the decision has been made to sell the remaining acres. The Burbon in this bottle is from the last crop raised on this farm during its last year as the Bar Lazy S LLP. What better way to preserve these memories than to bottle the final product from the farm.
