Miller-Docken Family Farm
Union County, South Dakota
The Miller-Docken Farm ground was established as Section 11 in Township 95, range 50, in Union County by President Hayes and was initially deeded to Thomas Wilson in 1873, and subsequently deeded to Louis Tanguay later that same year, and deeded to Charles LaBeeche in 1874. Records note that the land was not homesteaded or resided upon and was deeded to Michael White and his wife Bridget in August of 1881.
Various parties held the mortgage for the farm until July 14, 1923 when the south half of Section 11, Township 95, range 50 of Union land was sold by the Sheriff of Union County on the courthouse steps to Michael White for $41,895.40. Michael White died on November 11, 1924, and the land, per his will, was divided into six shares for each of his six children. The Abstract of Deeds lists several transactions to include foreclosures by one or more siblings, but eventually all portions of the ground was owned by Loretta Volin of Lennox, one of Michael White’s daughters. It appears by court documents that none of the land was occupied as a homestead by any member of the family through 1946. Available documents did not identify who built the house and farm buildings on the acreage or who lived on the acreage.
An agreement was entered into on July 16, 1946 between C.O. Peterson (Mortgager for Loretta Volin) and James Quinten Miller for the intended purchase of the South Half of Section 11, township 95, Range 50 of Union County. On March 1, 1947, the land was sold to James Quinten and Wanda Miller of Hawarden, Iowa. Available documentation does not indicate the total purchase price of the land, but indicates the Millers would assume the mortgage of record which had a balance due of twenty-one thousand and five hundred dollars ($21,500).
